Washington County - Washington County was founded February 9, 1887. The northern part of the county was formed from part of Weld County and the southern part of the county was formed from Arapahoe County in 1902. Akron and Yuma were both in the running for the county seat. Akron won the election and remains so today. It was named in honor of President George Washington. In the 1920s the population of Washington County was close to 13,000. The County was hit hard by the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. As of 2015 the population was approximately 4,800. Washington County covers approximately 1080 square miles.
